Top coats: the secret to a long-lasting manicure

A top coat is the final layer of your manicure and one of the most important. It protects the colour from chips and scratches, adds shine or a matte finish, and helps your manicure look fresh for longer. Some top coats also speed up drying or give a plumped gel effect.

Types of top coat

  • High-shine top coat: a glossy, mirror-like finish.
  • Gel-effect top coat: a plumped, gel-like look without a lamp.
  • Quick-dry top coat: helps polish set faster.
  • Matte top coat: turns any shade into a velvety matte finish.

How to use a top coat

  1. Let your colour dry for a minute or two.
  2. Apply one even layer, covering the whole nail.
  3. Brush along the free edge to seal the tip.
  4. Reapply every two to three days for extra wear.

Top coat and gel

Semi-permanent gel polish needs a gel top coat cured under a lamp. Regular top coats are for air-dry polishes.
